Help needed to make a custom PCB.
« on: September 04, 2026, 05:22:46 pm »
For a hobby project, I thought of making a small ECG device using an ADS1292R (or possibly ADS1298) and an ESP32-S3-WROOM-1 as the controller which transmits the output value to the smartphone and stores the data in a database as well as in a microSD card. The data is being used in an app that I made with an inbuilt AI algorithm to detect various factors in the readings.

At first, I thought of using an ESP32 separately and connecting it with the ADS1292R breakout board(link: https://protocentral.com/product/ads1292r-ecg-respiration-breakout-kit/), but then I wasn't satisfied with it. So, I thought of making a custom PCB in KiCAD with everything in a single board.

This is as far as I have gotten until now (the pdf is an image of the schematic), I added the schematic of the breakout kit and tried adding it to the ESP32 schematic I made. I want help finishing this, tips and advice and instructions (as this is my first time designing a PCB).

Hi, I’d be happy to help with your project.

I’m an electronics engineer experienced in ESP32, KiCad PCB design, embedded systems, and sensor interfaces. I can review your ADS1292R + ESP32-S3 schematic, help complete the circuit and PCB layout, and guide you through the design process step by step.
I can also advise on power, grounding, signal integrity, microSD, Bluetooth, and PCB manufacturing.

Feel free to share your current schematic, and we can discuss the next steps.

No sir, this is a custom board I designed in KiCAD and downloaded it as a PDF (In the print option, there is a Microsoft print to PDF option). For designing the ESP32, I used a YouTube video; for the ADS1292R board, I used the schematic from the github repository and made connections as required.

For one-offs I usually use such breakout boards and solder them (with connectors) on matrix board, and make the connections with lacquered ("enameled") wire. It may look "ugly", but that's in the eye of the beholder.

Huh?

For the rest, it is a reliable method. It is "more work", but you also save a lot of time compared to laying out and routing a custom PCB. And the biggest advantage: You can easily modify it later. Fix mistakes made out of ignorance, or add extra circuitry (provided you left room for that). And it's reliable. I have boards like this that still work after 15+ years (20+?)

This video just showed up yesterday...

There is an associated blog post here:

and at the end of the post you can download the Gerber files for the PCB he designed.

The board shown there is an ADS1292R, a 2-channel, 3-electrode setup. I'm being required to make one which is somewhat nearly a hospital-grade ECG system model (12-lead) to get other features like arrhythmia detection and other diagnoses. I had used the ADS1292r as a base model and decided to build up from that. I have made the PCB schematic using the schematic of the ADS1292R breakout board.

It's possible for me to design something like this.
But I would need to pay around 10000EUR per year for medical device liability insurance. Is that something that your company is willing to cover?
