PCB multiple part moving. Possibly stoopid
« on: March 25, 2026, 06:30:48 am »
I only upgraded from Kicad 5 to 8 (and now 9 today) about 6 months ago and I haven't done any heavy PCB work in that time, so I've mostly worked around this.
In older PCBnew, I could select multiple items, position my cursor where I wanted to move from (not necessarily on the parts - could be off in space somewhere), hit space to zero my relative coordinates, then hit m to move the selected group.
I would then move the cursor to where I wanted, with the selected parts staying relative to the cursor.
I've attached an image of an example. Here I want to move the group relative to the corner of the board, so I can shrink the board size down. But, the corner is a radius, so there is actually no board edge there.
I used this *a lot*.
This workflow has changed and its driving me batshit. If I hit m now on the example in the image, the cursor will jump and attach to somewhere on the edge radius. It wont even be on the grid. Then my relative coordinates are all wrong for the move.
On top of that, if I select a group, then hover my cursor over the edge cut somewhere and hit m to move, the cursor will jump to somewhere else on the edge cut. :(
I'm not sure what the new workflow is! My google is failing and can't seem to find any info about group moves that are not moving from a part origin.
Can anyone offer any advice?

PS: I'm pretty sure I want to keep "warp mouse to anchor of moved part" as this is useful for moving single parts.

Of course I just found the answer....
Move with reference.
Ive assigned it a hotkey. And it also takes an extra click - you have to select the reference, it is not just where the cursor currently is.
Now to retrain the muscle memory....

If you start with "possibly stoopid" in your title, do you still expect other people to read your post or respond to it's content?
Think a bit about that. (I did not read your post).

The new snapping behaviours are indeed often annoying.

I believe you can also hold some modifier key (Ctrl? Alt? Shift?) after starting the part move to temporarily disable them.

Thanks, Yeah ctrl and shift modifiers disable grid and object snapping for me.
Interestingly, when moving a component, ctrl disables snap to grid, but seems to cause the component to want to snap to graphical objects.
I think I just need to study the help a bit more.
I've done a bit of PCB work and "move with reference" seems replicates the old behavior I was looking for.

For as much as I like the new features of the later KiCad versions, I still prefer the way the PCB editor felt back in version 3.
