fpc connector, slide lock? How does it work?
« on: June 15, 2022, 07:17:07 am »
I cannot figure out how this FPC connector is supposed to work, even having the damn thing in my hand.

https://www.digikey.com.au/en/products/detail/te-connectivity-amp-connectors/4-1734839-0/2180502?s=N4IgTCBcDaICwFoCMB2AzHAHGgnAgDCALoC%2BQA

pdf datasheet drawing,

https://www.te.com/commerce/DocumentDelivery/DDEController?Action=srchrtrv&DocNm=1734839&DocType=Customer+Drawing&DocLang=English

It is supposed to be "Slide Lock"

Does that means it slides open somehow?

Or is the flex pushed into it, and that is what constitutes the sliding lock?

Also, are connections supposed to be made top-side or bottom side or both sides of the flex?

There are two tags on the outer edges that you pull on to unlock the connector.

Ok, Thanks I got it. It pulls apart in the same direction that the flex travels. Even having pulled the thing into pieces it wasn't clear.

The datasheet seems to indicate that something flips up.

EDIT: looking closely at the figure just causes more confusion. In the center figure, the one with something rotated 20 degrees, the terminals that solder to the PCB are on the right. ?

EDIT 2: This sell sheet seems to suggest that it's what TE calls a "stuffer actuator" as darkspr1te said. Now I'm curious about the angle shown in the figure in the datasheet...

The drawing with the angled cam confused me also. It suggests a kind of tilting lid style connector which I have seen before. But the drawing orientation/viewpoint implies the range of travel extends below the pcb surface.

I'am not 100% sure but i think it's saying that if this connector was mounted at the edge of the pcb (where pins are top right) then the latch with be loose when open and have 20deg of movement up and down  where if you mount fully on the pcb that movement will be restricted by the pcb itself .
