Rigid-Flex
« on: June 20, 2017, 05:34:37 pm »
Is there a basic cost multiplier of a rigid-flex board vs just a simple rigid PCB or a simple flex PCB?

I have never used rigid-flex, are there any caveats that I need to be aware of (or any good whitepapers I need to read)?

Thanks!

The cheap way would be to use a rigid PCB, and a flex PCB and have them connected via a FLZ connector. Will be way cheaper!

They can be with or without lock.

We want to avoid using connectors due to having sensitive analog lines.

pcbway.com do them, quote it online.  Will give you an idea.

Actually, Mr Packethead is 'mostly' correct - PCBway actually do RigidFlex, BUT their Online Ordering system is only for Flex PCBs.

You will need to upload your file via that GUI and place implicit instructions for them to contact you regarding details PRIOR to commencing production. They will then send it out and return a quote for you. Their Flex PCB cost is very reasonable.

Re: FFC connectors - we currently use connectors [28way, low profile, 0.5mm pitch], but require the board space for other things now, hence the move to RigidFlex. We will still need to use a connector on the 'other' side however.

I'm not certain who they use for their RigidFlex manufacturing, but we are about to shortly discover what their product is like - in the next week or so.

There is a stack of info online, and most of it is both contemporary and consistent. Wurth also produce a RigidFlex Guidebook which is great value.

Good luck - Peter

Wurth make arguably the best pcbs you can get.  But they come with a price point that precludes anyone who doe'snt have moonbeams and vaults of gold.

PCBWay Rigid-Flex only one option in the PCB, there is online pricing only rigid part price, and online calculation only flex board,So I recommend http://www.eevblog.com/wiki/index.php?title=PCB_Manufacturers to find the rigid-flex board. Please provide information about the desired type, dimension, quantity, etc.
