VS Code begat Eclipse Theia, and Theia begat Arduino IDE 2.0.

I'll definitely take that over the old one (calling that pitiful thing "IDE" was really stretching it)*.

I'm not too familiar with Theia, I hope the Eclipse Foundation will not make it as bloated and hideous as Eclipse.

* Rather, I would take it if I used Arduino (though probably I'd stay on VS Code + some extension).

I've played around with it a bit. It certainly seems a bit more fleshed out but it still doesn't behave like a modern IDE aside from having panels along the sides and bottom of the edit area. It's better than the old IDE but I would call it maybe adequate at best.

Different target audience - they are making it like that intentionally because it is targeting beginners and education market. There all those extra features are a distraction. That's why the old "IDE" is still so popular and widely used, despite its limitations.

More serious developers have likely switched to PlatformIO or directly VSCode since a long time ago.
