Has anyone tried the Mongoose network library?

Yes, I tried it
Open source embedded network library https://mongoose.ws
TCP/IP stack + TLS1.3 + HTTP/WebSocket/MQTT in a single file

I've been trying out Mongoose on a W6100-Pico2 eval board (porting W5500 raw driver was trivial).  The code is a few 10kB bigger compared to using the builtin sockets but part of that is full implementation vs partial/toy of the Wiznet example code.  The overall package seems to be a good fit for the home automation things I'm doing.

Wiznet created W55RP20 SIP which is a combo W5500 + RP2040 + flash.
Could be handy for those sort of things, they also have a devboard for that https://wiznet.io/products/evaluation-boards/w55rp20-evb-pico

Would be nice if Wiznet created a cut-down W5500 variant without TCP/IP stack, just an Ethernet transciever, I bet it might be cheaper than W5500.

What is the use case of a Wiznet without a TCP/IP stack? If you're gonna implement it in software, it's much cleaner to just use an MCU with an Ethernet peripheral + PHY over RMII rather than hack it together over SPI bus.

I suppose it would be good for ATmega and PIC users, but Microchip and WCH already have solutions like this—and WCH's prices are very reasonable.

Do they? I was not aware of it.
I know that WCH and Microchip and TI have micros with built-in MAC and PHY.

I am not aware of anyone offering a standalone MAC+PHY with pure Ethernet send/receive and no extra stack.

The Microchip ENC28J60 was a rather early (2006) 10MBit Ethernet Controller (with Phy.)
Talks to a microcontoller via SPI, available in DIP28 (!), and rather reasonably priced (~$5)

There is also the ENC424J600 (in 2009), which adds 100Mbps, more buffer memory, a parallel interace, and a "security engine."  But I don't think it has reached as far.  (Too little, too late?)

Yeah, price wise WCH CH390H is apparently the best, ~1.5 USD per unit
