installing raspberry pi library issue
« on: February 11, 2022, 12:47:01 am »
I am a raspberry pi noob so please forgive me if I sound like a novice here....

I am trying to set up a optical fingerprint sensor with my raspberry pi. I am following these instructions here:

https://tutorials-raspberrypi.com/how-to-use-raspberry-pi-fingerprint-sensor-authentication/

I get to the part where I try to install the python-fingerprint library by using: apt-get install python-fingerprint --yes

I am getting the following readback in my terminal:

root@raspberrypi:/home/pi# apt-get install python-fingerprint --yes

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 python-fingerprint : Depends: python:any (< 2.8)
                      Depends: python:any (>= 2.7.5-5~)
Depends: python-serial but it is not installable
Depends: python-pil but it is not installable

N: Ignoring file 'pm-codeworks.list.2' in directory '/etc/apt/sources.list.d/' as it has an invalid filename extension
N: Ignoring file 'pm-codeworks.list.3' in directory '/etc/apt/sources.list.d/' as it has an invalid filename extension
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

So it seems as though the package has 4 dependencies that it needs me to instal first but is unalble. the article makes mention of this and says to run: apt-get -f install

I did this but nothing really seemed to change.

I run the following command to detect if the sensor is there:

python2 /usr/share/doc/python-fingerprint/examples/example_index.py

But it cannot find the file. I was assuming the first couple steps in the article was downloading all the files i needed, but i cant seem to find it.

Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong?

That looks like an old package that depends on python2 which has been deprecated.

Perhaps it has been ported to python3 which might be called python3-fingerprint or something like that? Is this the one you were hoping to install?

A search also shows that there are modules for fingerprinting documents, to add to the confusion.

If you're using adafruit fingerprint sensor, I think you'd better look here: https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-optical-fingerprint-sensor/circuitpython
