Looking for PAL/GAL Dev Tools
« on: August 27, 2018, 02:29:06 pm »
Hi,

I'm looking for a compilation/simulation software for the PAL & GAL I have at home (a lot of 16R6, 20R4,20R8,22V10,26CV12 and 20X10)
and if I can use the same software for ALTERA MAX5000/7000 and AMD MACH1/MACH2, it would be perfect  :)

Operating system: From Windows 95 to 7
I'm open to ABEL,CUPL,Verilog, ... but not VHDL

I checked MachXL 6.0 & 6.2 documentation : PAL20X10 not supported
I tried the PLD module from Protel99 under XP, not very stable and strange behavior
Old Orcad had a PLD module but I think it supported only VHDL.
DOS PalAsm: No thanks  :palm:

Thanks for your help.
Marc

You can still download WinCUPL, the Atmel-focused version.

http://www.microchip.com/design-centers/programmable-logic/spld-cpld/tools/software/wincupl
- but that will not support the stranger parts - you are best to bin those.
ATF22V10 is fine, and ATF1502ASL / ATF1502BE will swallow those other SPLDs (in a modern Icc/Vcc/Package).

If you want more portable, there is also MyHDL ?

Verilog is probably the best looking forward, and there are some 'open FPGA efforts' around lattice FPGAs ?  eg https://github.com/cliffordwolf

You think I'd better throw them away but I like to use old SPLD/CPLD/FPGA and I have more than 1000 PAL at home, so no way  :)

Then good luck on your quest....

An alternative approach, if you have lots of spare time, is to make your own back-end to the tools.
CUPL compiles to a Berkley PLA file IIRC, and the Atmel ATF15xx fitters use that, to create the fuse-maps.

You made the 20X10 bold, so I guess that one is a focus item - is that OTP, or EE based  ? I presume you have a working programmer for that device ?
It may be possible to merge/massage a 22V10 fuse info file, with whatever makes that 20X10 different ?

or, there are better 22V10, that used to come from ICT, and google finds
http://www.vcfed.org/forum/archive/index.php/t-40469.html

and the last post there in 2017, has a link that looks still alive to ICT PLACE

Yes PAL20X10 is a focus item. It's an OTP Registered PAL with a XOR before the Flip-Flop.
I have 2 programmers for them (Elnec BeeProg+ and Data I/O Unisite)

I checked today Vantis Design Direct: 20X10 not supported  :(

It looks like PALASM supports PAL20X10... you can run it under DOSBOX.  I recently used it to enable IBASIC option an old HP Vector Network Analyzer (HP 8714B).

May I ask what did you use to program those PAL/GAL? The programmer and the program you use to load it?
