uC + accelerometer + bluetooth?
« on: February 16, 2015, 08:13:03 pm »

Hi all,
What's the smallest least power-hungry dev-kit or platform that has an accelerometer and a bluetooth radio on it?

My gadget would measure accelerations, possibly do some calculations on the uC, and send a more-or-less continuous data stream over BT to a phone or tablet.

thanks,
AW

Easy: find all the dev kits you have access to with uc, an accelerometer and a bluetooth radio and compare their current consumption.

Does anyone have experience with "LightBlue Bean" ?
https://punchthrough.com/bean/

I'm guessing the BLE radio does consume quite a lot of power, so the battery-life on a CR2032 would not be that great?

Not really small, but a WII remote is basically what you describe.
Homer: Kids, there's three ways to do things; the right way, the wrong way and the Max Power way!
Bart: Isn't that the wrong way?
Homer: Yeah, but faster!

I have a few different BLE chips that I use and evb149's comments are right on. They can be very power efficient when used in a way where it goes into sleep mode most of the time. Even GATT is designed so you read and write properties rather than have an always connected data stream. If they are constantly sending data you will eat through batteries pretty quickly.

The good thing is there are a lot of options for a combination micro-controller + BLE rather than two separate chips. It depends on what you are doing but I have seen issues due to having to interrupt program execution to service the bluetooth stack. So consider this if you think you want to use a single chip for this.
