Windows 11 WiFi adapter latency
« on: November 18, 2025, 07:35:26 pm »
I have 3 Windows 10 laptops. One of the machines is almost 15 years old. They all consistently ping my router at 1ms on WiFi (during idle and no iterference).

And I have one Windows 11 machine. It pings the same router consistently at 3-5ms. I find it insulting that the newest machine is the slowest on network latency. I've changed the WiFi atapter from MediaTek to Qualcomm, no effect. Also makes no difference if on 2.4GHz, 5Ghz, 802.11n or 802.11be. Experimented with power settings, driver settings, network settings, BIOS PCIe power setting, fresh Windows install. Only managed to make it worse, but never better. Seems like 3ms is the best what it can do. Is Windows 11 such a dog's breakfast or what? On ethernet, it's a typical <1ms, no issues.

If you have experience with this issue, your input is welcome.

Thanks

So a small update. It is not ICMP prioritization issue, everything is higher latency, TCP, UDP. I thought that DNS query (over UDP, from router's cache) is a good benchmark.

Old Win10 laptop on 802.11ac WPA2: 0.9ms

New Win11 laptop on 802.11be (does not matter actually): 2.2ms, forcing WPA2 drops it to around 2ms
New Win11 laptop with onboard Ethernet adapter: 0.4ms

So I would say it is clearly related to WLAN, not the networking stack in general, cause the ethernet timings are good.

What is the underlying reason is still not clear. Or how to diagnose it. Can't tell if TX or RX is lagging. Maybe it's interrupts issue or adapter waking up from low power state. But this happens with two different adapters, so...

Usually this is the result of the chipset sleeping for power savings. Even sound cards and other devices in the system will do this. Sometimes soundcards will come out of sleep with an audible "pop".

You can sometimes dig into the driver settings to disable sleep to prevent unwanted side effects.

Short answer: Yes.

Personally, I can't say I've come across this issue before, so wouldn't know where to start, I'm sure someone much smarter than me will be able to provide some advice.

I "updated" to W11, with the result that my laptop gets randomly disconnected from WIFI for no logical reason. It seems likely that it might be a side effect of the problem described by earlier posters.
