I would really look into what it would take to implement an ad-free paid forum membership tier. I know you’ve said the current plugin doesn’t do that, but maybe it’s something that wouldn’t be all that hard to do.

(And otherwise, perhaps wrap your banner ads in specifically-named HTML tags to make them easier to block. The tampermonkey/StopTheMadness JavaScript could then be a perk you give to members.)

Do people who see ads not use a PC? I only use a PC to use the Forum and I never see ads. I only imagine Google which sells advertising would not facilitate ad-blockers on an Android play store app but I've never checked that. Even less idea what Apple does.  But on a PC advertising is not there at all. It is better to block wasteful stuff at the source rather than have every user consuming bandwidth to download it and then block it.

I also think, without wanting to speak for Dave, that if he hasn't done paid perk levels by now he probably has already dismissed the thought. Just wait until ad-free perk members see an ad, that will be interesting. Who needs that kind of aggravation?

I have been using the forum today and noted the new advertisement locations, both under my name block and under text that I have posted.

I find this unacceptable as it could suggest that I am in some way promoting or supporting the advertised products that are in close proximity to my name or posted text. This surely has to be a mistake in the advertisement positioning setup ? I certainly hope so as it is a total mess at the moment.

I guess you’re using an ad blocker, because ads definitely appear on PCs. The screenshot I provided was from Firefox on Windows 11.

Ad blockers exist for both. But Google has indeed weakened the hooks in the Blink browser engine needed for good ad blocking. Apple has a totally different system. I’ll be honest, I am not a browser developer and don’t really know anything about the technical underpinnings of the browser engines and how they impact plugin/extension support.

and when the 'ad' takes up the entire screen on your phone, you can barely figure out where the ad ends and the forum is.  Was just trying to do this earlier, and couldn't even see what I was trying to post because the ad was everywhere, lol.

For Android there is Blockada: https://blokada.org/ - get the version from github rather than the play store (which is crippled).

Also TrackerControl: https://trackercontrol.org/ - targets trackers but seems to nix adverts as a byproduct.
