Remove branding from EEVblog multimeters
« on: November 13, 2025, 07:48:17 am »
I wish to remove branding from EEVBlog multimeters BM786 and BM2257. It looks like the paint around the mechanical switch would come off easily, while the branding above the display is under some sort of transparent masking and cannot be wiped away with alcohol. Can you confirm whether this is true or provide ideas on how to remove it?

I don't have an EEVblog-branded meter, but assume that the regular Brymen meters use the same nameplate style. It is a piece of transparent plastic with a textured front surface and the logo printed on the back, then stuck onto the housing using some adhesive.

I guess you could peel off the whole label, remove the adhesive with solvent, and sand off the paint layer. Then repaint the back in a color of your choice (to hide the adhesive which you will need to add back) and stick it back on. But do you really have to? Are you working in a "strictly no EEVblog" environment?  ;)

EDIT: This may prolong your "watched" status on the forum. It's a highly suspicious request.  ;)

I remove branding from everything I own. Just a personal preference.

For the 786 I would cut some black or gray adhesive vinyl and place it on top. You can risk it with acetone, but, the plastic might melt or it might haze the clear display window.

For the 2257 as mentioned above, its a sticker, so peel it off.

Reheating an old joke about upgrading an Apple II+ to an Apple IIe, you remove the batteries and probe cables from the EEVBlog 2257 and place them in a Brymen 2257.  Now you've removed the branding.

(The original, from Steve Wozniak, was that you unplug the power cord from the II+ and plug it into a IIe).

Both are just vinyl stickers, you can peel them off.

It is not about EEVblog logo, but all of them (brymen included).

Oh.  OK then.  I'm glad you don't have a particular dislike of the EEVblog brand.  That would seem rather at odds here.

Perhaps you have been tarred with the same brush as used by our state-owned TV station (ABC - Australian Broadcasting Corporation) administered in the past....?

( As an example, they precluded any and all branding of products used in a popular gardening show from being shown, covering them up with plain stickers.  It was a joke practically everybody thought looked silly - but we couldn't have publicly owned services promoting commercial products now could we?! )

We did a job in Perth a while back for a large global petrochemical company. Every item of equipment in their building had to be de-badged including the access control readers and CCTV cameras. The powder-coaters made out like thieves.

Whenever ABC radio have Saul Eslake or Marcus Padley comment on stock market news they always happen to mention their respective obviously commercial organisations.  ::)

That's not quite the same thing. Viewers should know where the opinions of guests especially with financial information is coming from. Just as I would want to know if they were speaking about a specific company stock it should be disclosed whether they own it. They might be talking up their own interests. There have been numerous instances where broadcasters have not disclosed when travel was provided. Say to an overseas press event unveiling a new car. There are endless examples , some may even involve the public broadcaster.

Also on a practical note these companies often serve as expert guests on commercial media and they have set up a small "studio" area with company branding visible. It could be perceived as advertising (which it is) but at least it isn't some material good or service like travel that would otherwise be an undisclosed conflict of interest
