Wow, I can't imagine paying $10k-$20k for animation for one video!  :o

TLDR; his channel is tanking and revenue is now under $10k/month.

His animations are pretty good. There is a auto channel i watch that uses https://animagraffs.com/ maybe he can pivot and find someone cheaper to make animations.

I wonder if his views are down or youtube is just paying less money

The solution seems obvious, lower the quantity of animated graphics, use more stock stuff, add some talking head etc.
I doubt viewers are going to stop watching because of that.

All of us e-youtubers are way down in views.

$10k is definitely insane for the 6-10 animations I see in his latest video. Its probably more detail than a Veritasium vid. But I guess it made sense a year ago when he was getting 3M+ views.

$5300/month in patreon: https://www.patreon.com/realengineering as you say should be enough if you scale back on the expenses.

That plus $10k/month in adsense, plus whatever he makes from owning part of Nebula, plus sponsored videos (e.g. IEEE recently, I also see Incogni sponsorship in the description)
If don't know if he has a team apart from the animators though.

I suspect the false positive rate of YouTube's AI detection system is going to end up working through all of the legitimate channels one by one, essentially demonetizing them, if only because the AI channels are going to get better over time.
