acceptable Q factor for capactior?
« on: February 28, 2014, 09:15:25 pm »
What is an acceptable Q factor for a 12000uF 400VDC capacitor?

Is a D of 0.05/Q=20 acceptable? I can't find the datasheet for what I am using, so I was wondering about a rule of thumb for capacitors this size.

Aluminum electrolytics typically place 0.3-0.05, more or less one-to-one with voltage, with better figures at higher voltages.

If you don't have a datasheet, worst-case is probably best to guess... if your application can tolerate 0.1-0.2, you're probably fine.
