Amazon web hosting test...
« on: April 13, 2017, 04:12:37 am »
Hi, i was just wondering if you coudl help me out with a small experiment..

Need to download a 100MB PDF file from a test server that is hosted in Amazon in Sydney.

http://52.63.49.110/

The file link is on that page called "BIG PDF"..  Its just a file of gibberish.

If you coudl post your Connection type and location, and how long it took that woudl be awesome.
On a quest to find increasingly complicated ways to blink things

About 1:30 mins to NZ on 10Mbps ADSL

And 1:30 mins to NZ on Spark 100Mbps Fibre

And 1.4 seconds (yep seconds) to an AWS server in the Sydney datacentre :)

So about 9.4MB/s.

San Francisco, USA
Comcast DOCSIS 3 business service.  (150Mbps)

Looks fine to me, especially given the long haul and hitting an EC2 instance directly without CloudFront or S3.

Foxtel/Bigpond cable, Brisbane, don't know offhand what the speed is supposed to be. Actual download speed was up and down like a bride's nightie, at this time of night quite possibly due to local congestion.

Romania , 500mbps down / 25 mbps up (cable) :   750 KB/s peak, 650K/s average in 2m 33s

2017-04-13 17:25:17 (650 KB/s) - `oversize_pdf_test_0.pdf' saved [101688487/101688487]

Netherlands , 100/100 (Leaseweb datacenter) : 5.77 MB/s peak, average 4.3 MB/s  in 23s

It ramps up slowly for the first 10s or so, ends up at peak download speed in both cases.

Just different routes, my ISP routes data through pccw global  and leaseweb uses Telstra

16/17 seconds to Dublin, using basic fiber to the curb technology. I think it is a 50/60Mbps connection to here. I could only get 35.5Mbps with speedtest just now. I may try again at home with a much faster link.

If you're actually hosting files, just load them in S3, sync buckets to multiple S3 regions or just add a CloudFront distribution :)
