Audio DSP FX Processor (Elektor)
« on: February 19, 2025, 12:28:45 pm »
Hi everybody,

I bought from Elektor the Audio DSP FX Processor kit. it is a kit with a ESP-Module and a board with an Adau1701 DSP.
According to the site and everything else, the developer Clemens Valens let us know how to use this board and ESP-module to program the Adau1701.

https://www.elektormagazine.nl/labs/audio-dsp-fx-processor

This could be wireless or by usb. where the ESP-module functions as programmer and debugger,
As far as i know, the esp has also the function to compile and download Sigma Studio Projects.

And there is my problem...

I'm able to upload from the Arduino sketch the software. it looks like the Adau1701 will also be programmed.
Then, there are within the examples, the according projects for Sigma Studio.

Now, when i open the according project, in my opinion, the ESP-module should also work as a programmer and debugger, for Sigma Studio.

But in Sigma Studio ,i can't change anything ,recompile and upload the changes, because the link (USB connection in Sigma Studio) remains red and never comes up.

I tried to get in contact at the Elektor website for some help, but no reactions...

Hopefully someone here will help me...

Friendly regards,

Ronny

Hi Ronny,

Saw your post, and the first thing that came up was the possibility of the USB device being "claimed".
I'm certainly not the expert on resolving USB conflicts (far from it), and I'm not at all sure if it helps,
but there just might be some other application that has already claimed exclusive access to your board.
For example, do you have the Arduino environment still running when you try to connect Sigma Studio?

Cheers, Evert-Jan

Hi Evert Jan,

Thank you for the reply...
According to the "claims" ,I don't think the problem is there...

I tried both ...(Arduino IDE opened and Arduino IDE closed)

When the Arduino IDE is opened , i am able to upload the sketch to the ESP-module and directly (within this same sketch by "include file") it programs the ADAU1701 and eeprom on the ADAU-board...

But when i did this, I'm not able to use the ESP-module as a "stand alone"-programmer.
i would like to do some adjustment in Sigma studio  and recompile and upload again...  ( all in SigmaStudio)

and that's where it goes wrong.... Sigma Studio doesn't recognize the plugged-in onboard ESP-Module as programmer...

and it doesn't do it with  Arduino IDE opened or closed....

Hopefully this is a little more explained...

Sigma Studio doesn't recognize the plugged-in onboard ESP-Module as programmer...

Hi,

Are you sure that's supported? i.e. has that been implemented in the ESP software? I think it has not (only 95% sure though).

I watched a bit of an Elektor video and they don't mention that being possible. Instead, they mention that Sigma Studio can connect using the WiFi connection on the ESP module (not the USB connection). And Sigma Studio does have a TCP/IP configuration option, so presumably that's what needs to be done (I have not used the TCP/IP config on that software, nor do I own the Elektor board).

If you didn't want to use the WiFi for some reason, then you could purchase a programmer and attach it to the header pins on the board that provide I2C access. However the programmer costs about $100 from memory. There are cheaper clones of the programmer, but on Windows they require messing about with drivers (might even need secure boot disabled!) so personally I would rather consider to use either use WiFi, or use the genuine USB programmer.

Thank you Shabaz and everybody else,

I also think you're right.
According to the circuit description (the reason why i bought this kit). it looks like it is als o a programmer....

The Elektor site says:

" The ESP32 can load the EEPROM with a DSP program received from another computer, wirelessly or over USB."

and that's why i thought it's also a programmer, because it can also upload the firmware to the adau-board...
and that's really different than a programmer for download a (program) within Sigma Studio...

I think it is a little confusing, and in the according video , it looks like they can program (link Compile Download (F7)) in Sigma Studio directly from Sigma Studio

there is also a shortened video on YouTube, posted by Elektor, where it looks like they can edit within Sigma Studio, but it doesn't show how they really do this...

They call it actually:
Programming the Elektor Audio DSP Processor with SigmaStudio

on 3.15 in the video, the man asked Clemens (The Designer) that if you change something "you can compile it and download it" and he says "yes"

that's a little bit the reason for misunderstood.

let me know what you think of this...

Thank you...

I think all they mean by that (I have not seen the code), is that, for USB, they provide software which can simply program the on-board memory, and not that it can be used directly with Sigma Studio.

That's quite normal; once the binary has been created with Sigma Studio, a user wouldn't ordinarily need to use Sigma Studio to load the on-board memory chip via USB. That would be done with any I2C programmer that can write to EEPROM or whatever, and that's what has most likely been implemented. I don't think they have implemented the code to make the project look like the official Sigma Studio USB programmer/debugger tool.

The compile and download direct from Sigma Studio is only with WiFi as I understand.

Thank you Shabaz,

"The compile and download direct from Sigma Studio is only with WiFi as I understand"

If you would know how this is supposed to work, that would be fine also.
For me, USB is certainly not a must.
I bought this, because the guys from Elektor showed, how you could use it directly from Sigma Studio.

So a WIFI Solution would also be great! :)

Thank you for thinking with me :)

Ronny

I'm curious about that WiFi method too (i.e. via the TCP/IP config in Sigma Studio). It was new to me until you raised this thread, that Sigma Studio had this option (in the past, I too had either directly programmed the EEPROM using custom software, or had used the official programmer/debugger using Sigma Studio software). For any next project with these DSP chips, I'm going to consider making up a WiFi adapter, just noticed there's one here that uses an ESP32: https://github.com/Wei1234c/TCPi

Hi Shabaz,

The last post actually looks like ,what i thought how it was supposed to work...

over tcp/ip wireless and the esp as server...

I already watched the video, and now I'm more diving deeper to it....

Hopefully also with some results....

to be continued... :)

Hi everyone,

Because i had some problems myself with this board to figure out how it works with Sigma Studio and the audio dsp fx processor board i dived a little more to it...

I made a "How To" manual (in Dutch) to get started with this development board.
download it at the bottom of this post

Although i stil think that a real USBi programmer is more useable, this wil als do a little bit the job...

i lead you through the proces of needed software and how to use the module to load an Arduino Sketch and to upload code in the ADAU and EEPROM.

if there are maybe some mistakes, or improvements, people are free to let me know or post them here..

Friendly regards,

Ronny

Looks good! (I could only follow the screenshots, but they provided enough information, and the text can be easily translated when needed of course). As you say, the USBi tool is indeed more flexible, but has that added cost. However, the WiFi method might give you similar functionality anyway, although I'm just guessing.

I wrote some code to write directly to EEPROM using a Raspberry Pi, again not as flexible as USBi, but it's here if anyone ever needs a Pi option: https://github.com/shabaz123/waveminer
(the program is called eeload).

Thank you Shabaz!

I certainly going to look at your github- program.

that is how it supposed to work...
with sharing and knowledge from more people, the result is more than once amazing

I also posted a question at the github site from Clemens.
hopefully he can give some more answers and tutorials...

we will see..

Friendly regards,

Ronny

Hello Everyone,

Clemens Valens, Developer of this board, sent me an email yesterday.
Thanks for that Clemens!

He added a description of his board and how to work with the software.
It was published in the Elektor magazine. I didn't know that.
He published these magazine articles now on the website.

It is now in the top of the article (Download Magazine Articles), which i posted the link at my 1st post on this blog.

Please use the "Say thanks" button instead of quoting a post just to say thank you.

There is a "Say thanks" button for each post, so we don't have to fill the forum with bloatware thank-you replies.
