Cell simulator
« on: December 19, 2016, 07:51:39 pm »
Hello all,

I have been trying to figure out a way of simulating 16 cell battery pack for a passive cell balancing circuit.

In the past, we've used a large voltage divider to test the cell voltage measurement, i.e. supply followed by series resistors, with the cell taps in between each resistor. But this only works for testing cell voltage measurement, not for testing the actual cell balancing.

My initial idea was to use several voltage shunt references on top of each other, I could adjust the cell voltages by adjusting the voltage dividers going into the voltage references. Not sure if that's a good idea.

What do you guys think would be a good solution to create something that would behave more-or-less like a battery composed of 16 cells in series, with taps between each cell?

If you are only thinking of simulating the circuit why not use 6 capacitors in series? You should be able to set the initial voltage of the caps as well.

When I said simulate, I meant more "mimic the behavior of". It's still physical system that I will be building. It would just be incredibly unsafe to test a cell balancing system with actual cells.
