Does This Schematic Look Right?
« on: November 06, 2017, 12:56:21 pm »

It's a high voltage power supply, ignore the diode at the bottom. The numbers on the flyback transformer are the number of turns.
This is the transformer and zvs driver:

My question: Should the earth ground be in place on the bottom half of the cascade? Or should it not be grounded?

Yes, you can connect to ground any of secondary output, to have ground referenced output (output positive or negative to ground). But, I'm doubting that is enough for driving X-ray tube. Perhaps some sort of output current and voltage control should be necessary for prolonged tube lifetime. Maybe you should consult tube datasheet/manufacturer to see at least what is min. voltage (different anode needs different voltage, e.g. tungsten usually needs 60 kV, some other works starting with just 15-20 kV, etc.). There you can also get some idea about grounding.

I'm not using a real x ray tube, just an old soviet rectifier. There is some online documentation on how to produce x-rays with it:

They're running over 0.1mA at 50kV through the 2X2 tube (5W good to 15 seconds but very hot).
2.2MEG 25W ballast resistor?
I'd consider smallish voltage-multiplier capacitors to give current-limiting instead. Ripple should get averaged out over the long exposure times.
