getting a digital display driver for a precision function generator

Just another project that i wanna build that can generate sine wave, square wave, triangle wave, etc.

i got a few ideas to build the analog part of the project but i am a little stuck in working out the digital part of the project which is the digital display of the function generator.

like what are the ways to display the information of the generated waveform on a LCD/7-seg LED screen?

keeping the question open-ended for a good discussion here
