Anyone know why you can't buy reels of 100nF 0603 50V caps at the moment?!
There isn't I'm looking now for a few reels. 100nF (0.1uF if you like) 0603 50V X7R £100 a reel! Nobody has them only obscure expensive ones

As Mike said, any reason to require 50V when a 100V part will do ? Is the dielectric particularly voltage dependant ?

I meant do you need it as
high as 50V - for 25v, price and availability is somewhat better.
Unless you need high temperature operation, X5R (+85 deg.) is fine and may be cheaper.
( not to be confused with Y5V - some people mistakenly think the 5 is the "crappy dielectric" indicator)
Another day, and somebody purchased the entire remaining stock of 50v caps I found.
I know of another 30k pieces of 50v 0.1uf x7r in stock at the same price....
And another 16k pieces for a few % more already in Europe.
But, holy crap man, everywhere else, these damn caps cost exactly 10x as much. I wonder if someone has made a mistake with the decimal place.
Time to figure out how many decoupling caps you _actually_ need...!

Where i work there is talk of a worldwide shortage of chip capacitors. Anybody else heard of this ?
Yes, we have seen both cancelled orders and increased lead times for both ceramic capacitor and some SMD resistors during the last year. Last Friday came questions about second sources for capacitors from Murata, one of our tier 1 preferred suppliers.
Also PCB laminate (6 layer rigid flex) has seen increased lead times and even for small prototype batches we must pay weeks in advance to secure the material for production.
Yup here also. This is for automotive qualified but I guess it's part of the same shortage. The recommendation is to design with smaller parts as the manufacturers will prefer to make more caps per material. The message is being pushed through sales channels for a while, from AVX, kemet, murata...

Yes. Every build I have done in the past 3-4 months has had multiple components out of stock at all distributors. Bread and butter stuff, mostly capacitors -- ceramic and tantalum, but even thick film resistors in common values. So far, there has always been an easy substitute -- an equivalent part from a different manufacturer or a different voltage or tolerance rating that was acceptable. Its just annoying to have to go hunt down alternatives.

No.
The company I work for is large and we place orders based on production forecasts several months in advance. Even though we have had issues, often with less than a months notice, of postponed component deliveries.
The recommendations we have received from global purchasing is to:
- not cancel or postpone planned deliveries
- follow up on deliveries and get confirmed delivery dates
- try to secure safety stocks for 6-12 months of production
For design engineers there is also a recommendation to not use odd packages that are single source. Go as generic as possible to not limit your options for second sources. Diodes had a fire in a plant little more than a year ago that was "challenging" for products with PowerDI packages, better to go for more commonly available SMA or SMB.
Also avoid anything larger than 0603, if possible both for second source and technical specs. Larger package equals more raw material.
the added loss of a key MLCC vendors in Y5V dielectric has placed added pressure on prices
Anyone know what this is referencing? I've seen a couple mentions recently of a major MLCC discontinuation but no one has been specific enough about it for me to find the actual announcement/PCN.
