HDMI to Displayport conversion, how?
« on: December 18, 2020, 12:28:22 pm »
I have a Displayport to VGA converter here that is based on the STDP3100 IC from ST. Now I don't have any source with Displayport output, only HDMI. Is there any easy way to convert a HDMI signal to be accepted by this converter?
I know there are direct HDMI->VGA converters, I am mostly just cuirous if I can make use of the converter what I already have?

You need active HDMI to VGA converter. Your DP to VGA converter is active as well but inputs completely different signal. If you have DVI output, there may be additional pins (DVI-I) for analog signal and then you can use passive adaptor, however modern graphics cards dropped that and only have DVI-D.

I don't think there's anything in HDMI that can't be passed through to DisplayPort - the latter can handle all that the former can.  LPCM audio etc.  It's the electrical signaling and negotiation that differs.  In fact, googling seems to suggest there's no shortage of small HDMI-to-DP adapters.  (HDMI in DP out dominates, but the other direction is I believe not much more complicated.)
