Identify Connector : IDC with double bumps?
« on: June 01, 2023, 01:35:04 pm »
I would like to get a longer interlink cable and was about to order a 100cm IDC cable with 50 pin IDC connectors... and then I noticed that the bumps are different?

Is this not IDC?

Thanks in advance

"IDC" just means "Insulation Displacement Connector", so any connector that punches through the insulation on the wire to make contact with the conductor is IDC.

There are a few variations in the connector keying style, some are more or less standard some of them may be special order or only made by a few manufacturers.  Your best bet may be to look through a few catalogs for 100mil IDC ribbon connectors and see if you can find one that matches.  Take a good look at the mating headers, since those are what you need to match.  You may even find that the header has snap-in keying gizmos that can be removed to accommodate different connectors if you can't find a direct match.

May be easier to find one with no bumps ( or cut the centre bump off) , and just make sure it's in the right way.

Yeah, for one-off just cut the bump out of a standard connector and make sure you connect it the right way.

I think the double bumps is considered "military keying".  There are some shrouded headers that have 3 notches so they can accommodate both styles.  There is also a style that has two narrow grooves in the female connector, and the headers have slots where keying ridges can be inserted.
