Identify Connector on Delta Fan (PN: NS85B00-16D11)
« on: November 07, 2023, 08:20:01 pm »
Looking for help identifying the connector used on this Delta fan PN NS85B00-16D11.  This fan was (is) used in HP Pavillion laptops.  Trying to find the receptacle for this connector so it can be repurposed in a different product.  Photo of the connector and dimensions (mm) of the connector I made for reference.  Any help is appreciated.

If you find the schematic for one of the laptops with this connector you may be able to find the part number.

After perusing some HP schematics I was able to retrieve the part number.  Link below.  Made by Aces Connectors.  Thanks.

Nice find! I suspect that getting them in small quantities will be devilishly difficult, though, so don’t be surprised if you end up needing to resort to changing the connector. :/

Hopefully not as I have to order a few thousand.  I'll resort to using an IDC connector before changing the connector.

Wait, that fan isn’t one of Delta’s standard products. Are you saying you want to use a custom part, custom-made for a different company, in a commercial product?!? That seems like a bad idea to me.

If it’s a few thousand, that might be enough to go to Delta and ask them to make more of them for you, with your connector of choice on the leads.

My client and I have had success doing this same sort of thing for the last 4 years (with Delta fans designed for laptops).  The inevitable will happen where the supply of the fans on the market will dry up and then I have to make a different PCB to accommodate a slightly different fan but the form factor changes every few years anyway so it works out.  I've approached Delta in the past and they just aren't interested in a few thousand at a time, not to mention the time suck of working with a big company like Delta.  It's a lot easier and faster for me to buy a few fans with the correct dimensions, test the performance and design a PCB.  My client will source the fans in the thousands while I build and test the PCBs.  Takes me around 2 weeks to have the first 25 boards done and then batches of 250 boards for the remainder of the fan supply.

I was able to secure the connectors from Aces Electronics.  Took a bit but they are on the way.
