identify this inductor
« on: May 13, 2017, 12:49:12 am »
Inductor from a 5.3kHz LC resonant circuit (heart rate receiver).  It's a no lead package and I don't have hot air so I think too challenging for me to remove from the board.  The 2 caps that are in parallel are tiny little fuckers (an 0201 and an 0402 from the looks of it) and those too would be difficult for me due to the size and the placement.  (If I could remove the caps and measure them, I could determine the inductance since I know the resonant frequency.)

The markings are

EPCOS
502605A0001
*71892-????
*9472

The * markings are different from part to part.  I can't find 502605 or 502605A0001 in EPCOS part numbers so I'm at a loss.  Nor can I even find this shape/package of inductor at all.

The dimensions are 11.42L x 3.46W x 2.00H (mm).

That looks more like a filter or delay line rather than just a simple inductor.
If 94 is the year of the date code, good luck finding a matching 23 year old part.

I doubt 94 is the date code, because there were no 0402/0201 parts in 1994.

It is a different part number, but the mechanical dimensions match.
Maybe it is a custom variant?

That must be it!!  Thanks so much!   :-+

If you go by the data sheet for the current part, 9472 (another one I have in front of me is 9490) does seem like a date code.  The data sheet says the format is YWWD so that'd be 1999 / 2009, week 47, tuesday.  The data sheet for the board this part is on is dated 2010 so I will guess 2009 for the component date.

The board it's on has a custom ASIC, so it is definitely made in sufficient quantity to justify a custom/customized EPCOS coil.  Or: it looks like TDK bought EPCOS in 2008, so that is roughly the proper timing for a part numbering scheme change.  So it could have been a standard part that now has a different p/n equivalent.  Given that a standard coil could be tuned to whatever frequency by selecting different capacitance I'm not sure why a custom part would be warranted.

One of the other markings certainly must encode the L value.  I will do my best to remove one and check the inductance.  While I don't have hot air, we do have a plastic welder in our open lab so I suppose if I can control the heat well enough it'll work just as well.  I can afford to destroy one of the boards if it comes to that.
