Photodiode / Transimpedance Circuit simulation with QUCS
« on: March 15, 2015, 01:28:21 pm »
Hi everybody,

QUCS offers a photodiode as a component. But when I run a simulation, the output (see attached screenshot) is not what I expected.
The voltage at the summing junction is constantly -0.742 Volts. Since the non-inverting input is referenced to 0V, I expected the voltage at the summing junction should be forced down by the output-voltage also to 0V.
What am I missing here? Thanks in advance for every hint & tip!

You need more current flowing into the - node, to make up for the photodiode's current. Either decrease the feedback resistor, or increase supply voltage (your output is saturating).

The input common mode range of this op amp does not include the negative supply rail.

As a newbie in electronics, pls. allow me to ask if you could explain this a bit more. I can only assume what you mean, and now something like this is keeping my brain busy: the photodiode is creating at the summing junction a negative potential (relating to GND). But since Vee is also on GND, the OpAmp cannot handle a potential more negative than at Vee ... is this what you mean?

You have to keep the inputs away from the rails.

Also consider putting a small cap across the feedback resistor to reduce ringing.

They have taken the trouble to give you a coherent answer.
There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.
