Powering off LCDs

Hi guys,

I'm wondering what sort of damage occurs from LCDs when you power them off without the correct shut down procedures. Many datasheets say that certain power supplies should be removed first etc. Could somebody enlighten me on this? For reference, I'm talking COG LCDs as opposed to OLEDs.
