i'm making myself a set of battery powered speakers that double as dual headphone amplifiers. i've got the audio side nailed down and now i'm working out the battery side. i want to charge the battery (single cell lithium polymer) using USB. what i've done in the past with these projects is use a charging IC and limit the current to less than 100mA that way i can plug it into a computer (without enumeration) to charge and not shut down the ports do to over current. another solution i've used is an FTDI chip ft230x. this chip can enumerate requesting 500mA and then turn on a FET to feed the charge IC which was set to 370mA. this worked well as a solution because there was a micro on the board and i used the FTDI for debugging purposes. the speaker board won't have a micro of any kind so the FTDI won't be a good fit.
i want to charge at between 200mA and 300mA and i want to be compatible with both computer USB ports and wall chargers. is there a chip that will enumerate, enable power and be able to detect wall chargers without any other thrills?
during some googling i came across the MAX8895 which will not only enumerate, detect a stand alone usb charger, but also has battery charging built in. unfortunately it only comes in a BGA package and costs over $3.
