Smart Router
« on: August 04, 2014, 11:08:32 am »
Hello everybody,
I want to make a router, that has also a single board computer integrated. The point of the SBC is to provide USB3.0 and USB2.0(printer or other devices) access to the network.
So, i plan to use a CPU module with the IMX6 MPU from freescale. For the USB3.0 i will use a 4 port USB to PCI bridge and for the USB2.0, i will use the 2 prots from the CPU Module. Maybe i will put some GPIO on a parallel port and a RS232.
The problem is that I'm not good at software, so any help would be apreciated. ;D

btw... what's the problem with software ? you need a device driver/ kernel module  for the USB controller and Bob's your uncle ! ;)

Not really. I want just a way to be able to read/write USB3.0 drives and pen drives(I know that it will not come close to the USB3.0 speed, but it will do better than 50mB/sec). And the bonus, I could also conect a printer to the network and also maybe use the MPU to simulate a NAS(using the drives connected to USB ports).
I plan to use a stripped Linux, but the problem is that i don't have any sort of experience with OS :-//. Not that this would be a problem(this project is more about the journey than the destination).
This project is a long term one and I want to make it for myself, but if somebody is interested i may do a small batch(or big ::)).

how do you plan to make a router if you got no experience with linux OS ? i don't get it.

but first of all - start learning linux internals , you will be not able to do anything on your project without serious knowledge in the area.

This is already doable and _done_, with a very large variety of hardware already on the market.
