Telit + Python. Where do I start?
« on: January 28, 2016, 09:09:02 pm »
I've used Telit GSM modems in the past - under an external processor, but haven't used Python a day in my life.
Yesterday I was approached to explore a solution using the internal Python functionality of the Telit modules.
I have all the hardware, but what do I need to do to get them going using Python under a Windows dev environment?

What is free to download, what's not.
Samples, walk through etc ?
Normally I'd struggle through some of this before asking basic questions, but my client is in a jam, so I need to give him some hope without the added lead time!

Thanks

I've never heard of Telit before.  Their website (http://www.telit.com/support/programming-tools/python/) is quite vague on anything you need to download and doesn't seem to provide links.  It also looks like they have a technical forum guarded by a user login (http://www.telit.com/technical-forum/).

It sounds like to really get started with this, you need to download their particular package because it comes with all the custom libraries needed to control their hardware.

In order to get started Telit provides the Telit Python© Package with the Python© Win tool for Windows which makes it easy to write and test Python© scripts.

Before helping you further, it'll be important to know if they are using either Python 2 or Python 3.  There are some syntax and functionality differences.

I think you're right re: proprietary tools.

I received a response from Telit's local distributor with a lot of information - now I need to wade through everything to see where it takes me... if I think of anything, or anyone else has any suggestions - keep in touch!

Luckily - it seems they have a lot of files (hopefully a lot of useful info as well) in the package.
Cheers

Everything needed to use Telit Python is free of charge and can be downloaded from Telit's website. Telit's 2G modules uses Python 1.5.2+ and 3G - 2.7.2. I am using Telit modules with Python many years, so if someone have question  - ask me.  :)

  • Why shouldn't we question everything?

A friend who is using Python recommended a freeware integrated environment called Anaconda for Python development.

I haven't tried it yet, so can't comment.

For 2G modules is better to use Telit PythonWin. This is editor and compiler (to bytecode with ,pyo file extension). After last changes in Telit's website download of PythonWin is unavailable. It is strange, because it is really free and can be downloaded from Telit's distributors and other sites:
http://www.lte.com.tr/technical-documents-5/gsm-gprs-gps-umts-programs-documents.php
http://atoma.spb.ru/documentation/376/nabor-utilit-dlja-raboty-s-python (press "???????" button)
http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/111277/Cellular-Development-with-Telit-GSM-Module-and-Pyt
Python scripts MUST be compiled to bytecode BEFORE loading in Telit module. Loading uncompiled scripts will force module to compile them first. This will take a lot of time.

Second utility is Telit XFP tool that is used to update module firmware vie first serial port.

Third useful utility is Rsterm that is used to write/read compiled scripts to/from module. It can be downloaded here:

With telit GE863-GPS I'm using standard python 1.5 build on Linux for building to bytecode and

https://github.com/GROUNDLAB/Telit-Loader

for uploading files to telit modules.

Note that there are old modules that have pyton 1.5 interpreter and never that implement python 2.7 language.

My GE863-GPS is soooooooooo slow. Basically code is run so slowly that you never need any waiting in your code etc.. ;)
Don't have never, python 2.7, modules but I hope these are much faster (and they implement some kind of threading).

Telit XPF tools for uploading firmware is rather useless since even distributors no longer publish firmware files.

Telit is very closed and unfriendly to hobbyists environment unfortunately. Download zone / technical forum area on telit.com is restricted
and telit company doesn't want to give access to it.

All Telit 2G modules are based on 1.5.2+. 2.7.2 is on 3G modules and threading module is included.
You are using too old module. GE863-GPS is out of production and no new firmware for it. The last (maybe) is 7.00.703.
You have to migrate to GE864-GPS or to GE(L)865 with SL868-A.
You can register in Telit forum but it is useless, because Telit support people are not developers and I'm sure that you know much more than all of them. If you need something from download zone - let me know. ;)
Check if your firmware support AT#CPUMODE=...
