Ultrasonic transducer driver
« on: May 27, 2023, 06:48:33 pm »
I want to build an ultrasonic transducer driver for use in a DIY ultrasonic cleaner. I have one of these https://www.piezoelements.com/piezoceramic-transducer/60w-40khz-ultrasonic-piezoelectric-cleaning.html which claims 60W rated power with 25 ohms resistance at resonance. Since P = V^2/R and V=IR, I believe this is ~38V and ~1.6A to drive it at rated power.

I did some Googling but I'm not finding a lot of reference designs or tutorials suitable for a hobbyist like myself. It seems some off the shelf Chinese ultrasonic drivers are using a self-oscillating design (Royer oscillator?) to generate 200-300V for a 60W transducer. Why are they doing this -- shouldn't ~40V be sufficient? If ~40V is sufficient, can I use a transformer with a 1:4 windings ratio to boost 12V input to unregulated 48V output? Notwithstanding the viability of this, my thought is something along the lines of this with snubber values TBD.
