Video Tutorial: Tutorial on Linear and Non-linear Circuits
« on: October 17, 2011, 02:28:03 am »
In this episode Shahriar investigates the impact of linearity and distortion on analog circuits. The source of a non-linear input/output characteristic is presented in three different domains: mathematical, time domain and frequency domain. After the theoretical discussion, a sample circuit is built and tested to illustrate real time signal distortion. The criteria for measuring non-linearity is also presented. Furthermore, the importance of a two-tone test for bandwidth limited circuits is shown theoretically and experimentally. There is another quiz in this episode! Please discuss the answer on the forum or in the comment section.

No one wants to solve the quiz? Usually I get answers right away!

I don't like the quizes, if you want to know the answer you have to search through the site/youtube/forums for comments in the hope someone has got it right!

I think its so obvious, the thread starter is campaigning his site for more visitor/view hit counts, nothing wrong though, personally I think this trick to lure viewer its kinda lame, you should  think harder than this method.

Hugo, dont feel offended, its a honest feedback.

I don't know if you have actually ever visited my site or not. It has no advertisement, it makes no profit. In fact, I spend a considerable amount of time and money to keep it up. It is done out of pure passion and the love for teaching. I don't need to lure anyone to my site at all, the content speaks for itself.

I will continue to post a link to my new videos on this website, many people seem to like it and benefit from it. You are free to ignore my posts in the future to avoid being lured to my site.

As for the quiz questions, it gives me great satisfaction to know people attempt to solve them and discuss the answers. It just teaches more people about the concepts.

I appreciate the links here and your well thought out videos. Your presentation is clear and well thought out. Thank you for your hard work on these and sharing your knowledge for free.

Thanks Shahriar

i will say, thats a quality content in the video. kudos to hugos! except, dont too rush. in my situation, i only halfway through. i'm gonna sleep first, let my PC turned on to complete the next half of it to be downloaded in the next few hours. its worth it! ;) so not so rush there. and dont mind some of the "not so good as expected" posts (past or future) will ya?, its normal here. just act neutral like nothing has happened ;)

ok completely watched it. about your quiz, i cannot see any direct and simple answer for that. i need to show some graph and math formula to explain and still i'm not so expert, so not easy there. how to register to your forum? i did capthca and after that it hanged ???

IMHO you are a retard, the educational value of his videos is tremendous compared to Dave's (sorry Dave, but it's true). If he never posted here I would never know about his vids, this is what internet is for - sharing info, it's not like benefits from it in any way. Also his vids are long and detailed.

worth every second! but one thing make me "mad" at hugo is that he made me lust on that spectrum analyzer and LCD'ed power supply >:( :P :D ;)
edit: and his "board pointer" is really an irony.

I guess your english is not very good isn't it ? Maybe using french since you're canadian ?

Read again kid, I have nothing against that site Hugo pointed out, just hinting out there are better method, infact I admire Shahriar's excellent video blog very much which imo is more meaty and deeper in technical stuff.

Yes, his videos are excellent.
I never intended my blog to be educational in electronics theory to that extent, that is why I have not done many episodes like that.
If you search around there are tons of electronics theory videos, including many from well known universities. You can almost do their entire EE theory courses by watching the videos.
You can't be all things to all people.

Dave.

Shahriar your videos are excellent and each one is worth watching multiple times so that they sink in better.
Please ignore the useless comments, this is the internet for you.

As for the puzzle, which was " Why connecting two diodes cancels second order harmonics? "

Is it because two diodes work 180 degrees out of phase, so that their 2nd order harmonics are exactly out of phase and cancel out ?
However 3rd order harmonics are not ecactly antiphase because they are different frquency. In fact they are more like 120 degrees out of phase so they do not cancel out ?

So maybe if you can shift the phase of one of the diodes by 60 degrees with a capacitor you can get the odd harmonics to cancel out instead of the even ones?

Great stuff, Hugenous! Just added you as a 3rd blog worth keeping up with. :D

To answer the quiz question:

A function is even if f(-t) = f(t), or symmetric about the y-axis.
A function is odd if f(-t) = -f(t), or symmetric about the x-axis.

With 1 diode at the output, harmonics were from periodicity of the input signal convolved with contributions from the Taylor expansion of the exponential. If we think about the output with respect to the input sine wave, then the output is neither odd nor even so all harmonics show up (spectrum analyzer uses zero-crossing as frame of reference?).

But with 2 diodes, the output signal becomes symmetric about the x-axis (or an odd f'n), so the even harmonics no longer contribute to the output signal. The residual even harmonics probably stem from the difference in reverse leakage current between the two diodes.
