Xilinx/AMD Vivado software install failure - problem found
« on: October 29, 2023, 03:42:36 am »
For the past few months I have been trying to install either Xilinx ISE or Vivado, from downloads from their site or previous copies I kept that worked on previous Windows installs. All have silently failed when I have run the xsetup.exe etc. After some reading online I found that in the xsetup.bat file found in the \bin folder they run the following test to check for admin priviledges:

Code: [Select]
%SYSTEMROOT%\System32\net session >nul 2>&1
if NOT %errorLevel% == 0 (
  echo ERROR: Administrative permissions are not available. Please restart the command line shell as Administrator.
  set EXITCODE=1
  goto :end
)

The problem is that on my current OS install, the services that this test depends on are not running! If I 'REM' out this test everything works just fine. I guess the Web installer runs the same test and fails accordingly, might have to go for the full download and just modify the .bat file. Hope this might help any others that are stuck. :)

Without being familiar with this install my first thought was to ask what is preventing the command line shell being started with Administrator privileges?

The command shell did have administrator privileges, checked that they were elevated in TaskManager. The error message is incorrect if the service it is checking is not running, it is based upon the assumption that the requisit service is active, in my case that is not correct.

Another used finds Xilinx to be a pain in the ass!!! There are so many bugs in their offerings and when you migrate some of their stuff that was working under XP/7/8 up to a system running W10 you find in won't connect to the platform cable under the older versions of Impact and so forth. And Vivado doesn't support much of the older legacy CPLD's and FPGA's. So if you are a production company (GE/WABTEC Locomotive factory) we had to keep an old XP system as well as a W10 system running. ISE on the old system and Vivado on the newer. We had some serious problems with Xilinx fabric also surmised to be localized heating in a portion of the die with ensuing partial fabric failure. Naturally Xilinx blamed our power supply sequencing during power-up and power-down as the culprit. Our supply sequencer did however meet every published timing specification. We moved away from 'Brand X' where ever possible as there are many good competitors in the field. It is amazing how Xilinx tools consume over 9gb of drive space!!! Code written in GWBasic???

Collector and repairer of vintage and not so vintage electronic gadgets and test equipment. What's the difference between a pizza and a musician? A pizza can feed a family of four!! Classically trained guitarist. Sound engineer.

Interesting you worked for GE/WABTEC locomotives, I used to work for CLYDE/EMD locomotives in Australia a competitor for the GE brand of power assemblies. You might be interested that the new integrated installer weighs in at 105GB compressed! That does include both Windows and Linux, but it is a LOT. :)

P.S. I did use an Altera device in the mid 80's, DOS tools as well but it was revolutionary compared to standard logic.
