Too Many Amps?
« on: August 23, 2019, 02:02:30 pm »
I have a Lepai audio amplifier that requires a 5V, 2A  DC input "wall-wart."
Can I use a 5V, 3A unit without damaging the amplifier?

The input specs of appliances is usually the maximum current they use, or the minimum current the power supply should be able to deliver. So the power supply should be at least 2 A, a more powerful supply is not a problem. A 3 A supply is absolutely fine.
I would just be careful if more than some 20 A, if there is no suitable fuse in the supply. It would not damage the amplifier, but a short at the cables from the supply could cause a mess.

Yes, the current rating represents the maximum available current but the load will only draw the necessary current.

Yes, 300A or 3000A doesn't matter.

More is fine, less is not.
