Epson EH-TW550 no longer working
« on: July 09, 2017, 02:12:25 pm »
A friend of mine has a 7 years old Epson EH-TW5500 projector that’s no longer working. When turned on, it always goes back to standby mode after a bit less than 25 s. I can’t see or hear anything during this time. Has someone the same projector? Should something happen during those first 25 seconds? I could not find any technical documentation. Any idea is welcome. Thanks.
And sadly, the lamp was replaced a month ago  :(

Thanks. I found 4 fans. I will test them.

When you turned on, what is the status of those indicator lamps? RED, Blinking?

No visible status on the 2 LED (Lamp and Temp). They remain off.

Recheck the filter and lamp doors - many projectors have switches in them to detect whether the lamp cover is properly closed and filters are correctly inserted.

It's weird that you are getting no indications at all on the LEDs though.

When the cover is not closed, the projector does not start at all. I still have to test the fans.
I contacted Epson but I do not expect any useful answer.

Not sure whether you saw this or not, so throwing it out there just in case: https://files.support.epson.com/htmldocs/bl475wi/bl475wiug/source/troubleshooting/reference/problem_power.html

Same goes for this thread: https://www.eevblog.com/forum/projects/infocus-in104-projector-shuts-down-a-short-period-after-power-on/

Also, the fact that the new lamp has been recently replaced may not say much. There are counterfeit project lamps (see e.g. http://www.counterfeitlamps.com) and some of them lose their internal gas pressure rapidly, rendering them useless.

On that note, do you hear any noises coming from the projector after trying to turn it on - like clicking, buzzing or humming?

If the projector doesn't show error codes with LEDs, it must be a power supply problem.
If the error is from fans, lamps or other controlled internal part, the system would tell about it.

Almost certain the lamp is an original one. He even asked the vendor (a reputable specialist) to install it.
There is absolutely no noise (from fans or anything else) when the projector is turned on. I don't know if the fans should start immediately (at least during the first 25 seconds). But I am planning to test them (next week-end).

I had some time yesterday to test the fans and they are working.

I measured the voltages on the 12 pins of power connector. When the projector is in standby mode, I read 3.3V on 2 of them and 3.1V on a third one. Not other voltages were present when I switched on the projector (on/off soft switch).

An EPSON Piranha2 chip (micro controller ?) seems to be powered by one of the 3.3V and is closed to the connector for the switches/LED panel. I suppose it is responsible for turning on the power supply but don't do it for some unknown reason.

I dismounted the block of the power supply. There are in fact 2 modules : one for the main board and one for the lamp. I was a bit surprised by that one:

Is it a high voltage supply ?
On the lamp, I can read 200W 80V:

A small cable is also going from the lamp supply to the main board (for control / status ?).

This is the main board:

and the second module of the power supply:

There is no visible sign of damage.
