Farnell EC30/2 - what X/Y rated capacitor from negative to earth?
« on: September 08, 2017, 11:57:58 am »
I've got a Farnell EC30/2 bench supply here. It has a lurking cracked and knackered RIFA X class smoke bomb capacitor in it across the negative and ground terminals. This is GOING as I distrust the infernal things after a few small fires.

This is a floating supply with no isolation or floating voltage limits specified.

Now AFAIK this should be a Y rated capacitor in 2017. Am I ok stuffing a Y1 across it instead?

In general, class X are for line to neutral applications, and class Y are for line or neutral to ground applications. So yes, if anything it should be class Y, and since Y1 is "better" than Y2, you should be OK.
