GTX 1070 mini OC capacitor short to the ground?
« on: January 22, 2022, 01:12:28 pm »
Hi Guys!
I have a 1070 GV-N1070IXOC-8GB videocard, and it has the following symptoms:
Nothing spins, no fann nou output.
The pci bus does not recognise it.
But:
There is no visible burn markt anywhere, the powerrail is not shorted to the ground.
In my assumption, the gpu resistance is not shorted, and the memory resistances seems to be fine.

The board has 4 caps, which share a common ground, three of them are connected to the 12 v as expected, but the fourth is shorted. I have removed the cap, but it seems, that the short is elswhere.
Does anyone have any idea how this can be?

I mean that, the cap that I took out does not seem to be connected to the 12V rail.
In my assumption, I must first find the short to the ground, and the find the missing 12v connection? I am lost.

Resistances measured seem more or less ok since it's vcore and vram. Check if there is no faulty MLCC like discussed here https://www.eevblog.com/forum/repair/gigabyte-gtx-1070-mini-no-fan-spin-no-video-dead-cap-found/

Photo is blurry but C178 seems to have a crack or some dirt on it.

That's what I noticed too, however I wasnt sure, if that could be responsible for it. I will try to desolder it without damaging the board, but I have limited skills.

Sooo I took down 177, and the short disappeared.
 ;D ;D

However, the cap "left side" still isn't connected to the 12v rail directly, is it possible?

Read the other thread I gave the link to. There is a blown fuse.

I read, it and I checked it, but visually it was ok, but now I checked with multimeter, and its actually blown |O
Anyway, I will buy a new one and replace it, also based on the thread, tha capacity should be around 4.7uF 16v.
However if I read it correctly, it might not be necessary?
Do you think I could just run it without that single cap?

It will still work without a cap but it's better to replace it.
