Looking for a capacitor
« on: March 17, 2024, 07:21:16 pm »
Hello,
I am looking for a capacitor, I think the english word is safety or suppression capacitor.

It is from a heater controller between mains. It blew up, I removed it and now the controller works again.
Unfortunately I can't find it online, can someone tell me what I could use instead? It seems to be 5nF Y1?

Many thanks!

Thank you for your help.
In Germany I found this one, does it matter if it is Y1 or Y2?

Ok, I found the explanation for Y1 and Y2. IMHO Y2 should also be fine...

That should never happen with a Y cap. It is there to provide interference suppression but safe isolation between primary (mains) and secondary sides, or primary and ground. Y1 capacitors have a test voltage of 8kV and Y2, 5kV. What happened? Nearby lightning strike?

It is from a heater controller between mains.

If the capacitor is connected from line to line, then it's an X class capacitor, not Y class.

That said, your chosen replacement appears to be X1/Y2 rated.

Does the rest of the circuit work? Assuming it's not a fake Y capacitor, then I would expect other parts to be badly damaged it replacing it will not fix it.

Sorry for the late reply.

The rest of the circuit works after I removed the capacitor. I don't know what happened as no-one was at home when it blew.

The one I ordered is a Y2, I have to recheck if it connects between mains or to ground.

Thank you for all your help and information!
