Metcal MX5000 repair
« on: February 04, 2014, 09:17:01 pm »
Just payed over the odds for a broken Metcal MX5000 (silly me). Powers up, detects whether or not a handpiece is connected with tip, but doesn't warm up. Just shows 'Ready'. Looked inside and someone has replaced a LM2576 which made fire judging by the adjacent burn marks on the inside of the enclosure.

Anybody got storys, tips or advice? Or a proper manual would be very handy(I see a calibration menu)? My google skills really don't seam up to the task. I've only been able to find a very basic manual. I can't even find teardown photos to compare.

I think the circuitry isn't too different to the 500, for which there is a schematic available.
Youtube channel:Taking wierd stuff apart. Very apart.
Mike's Electric Stuff: High voltage, vintage electronics etc.
Day Job: Mostly LEDs

Thanks for the info.

Maybe someone else will have luck fixing it or of interest to someone experimenting with DIY Metcal supplys. I've listed it on ebay UK http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=251593198053. My electronics knowledge is too primitive. I haven't changed any components, evidence someone else tried before me.

2 boards in this MX5000, main power supply (24V and 48V out if I remember) shows good voltages on a DMM. Second board with MCU and display shows damage around a switching regulator. The MX5000 was showing steady 13.56Mhz on the selected hand piece output with iron attached till the switching regulater literally exploded like a gun shot. Output was unstable after that. Photos on ebay listing.

Thanks
