Onkyo A-RV401 first repair going bad
« on: October 23, 2023, 11:46:32 pm »
I'm a newbie I don't have any experience with pcb repairs I found this receiver in working condition and it blew up when I powered it back on after wiping it down with a damp cloth I learned to identify the components that burned out bought and replace all but one where I find that I damaged the circuit board removing the old resistor My questions can I fix it now if yes what should I do I have photos of the interior view with case removed from one on ebay but I'll only post those on request Here's a photo of what I did to this poor thing There was a problem with my 936B soldering station the tips were too short for the screw down cylinder bracket and were never tight fitting so they weren't really heating up I should have realized it from the start but it took me forever to notice I even bought a Weller in the interim and may have caused the damage with that Now my 936B works good cause I bought new tips that come with their own screw down sleeve bracket and they fit tight

Maybe you should start by repairing your keyboard.  :)

Wow, how did you manage to poke such a giant hole in the PCB?  :palm:
Anyhow, I'm afraid I was unable to find a service manual for that particular model.
So figuring this out could be difficult, unless you could somehow source and/or find a pic of that board in undamaged state

Actually, I was just able to find some sources for the service manual (but they all require payment, so it's not for free!):

https://www.owner-manuals.com/ARV401-service-manual-ONKYO.html
https://www.manualzone.com/repair-service-manuals/Onkyo/A-RV401-ARV401/RWSPFM-56182456-1
https://www.schematics.me/purchase.php?id=Onkyo+A-RV401+Service+Manual+%2F+Schematics

Can't say if any of the above sites are reputable. But anyhow, provided it's legit, it'd help you figure out if there were any components on the other end, and what went where (you could solder wires between the points to reconnect em, preferably of AWG18 or lower)

I've found that one aswell, but it requires an account to download (and they don't accept registrations!)
so you're gonna have to pay for the service manual if you wanna get this one fixed, it's not overly expensive.

You don't need to, you have the schematics (look a few posts above)
You could most likely tell from that what went where and if there were any components on the opposite side of the board.
If you're not experienced enough to deal with it, then you're gonna have to find someone who is (or take it to a repair shop)

It doesn't look that bad. It looks like the pads are wrecked, so you need to solder the new part to something else on the trace. If the traces are broken then you need to bridge them. The bad news is there could be shorted semiconductors without visible damage, in which case your new parts will fry when you turn it on.

That picture has very low resolution, details are hard to see, can't tell if it's a hole, burned pcb or a just a lot of burned flux.

Well nothing terrible, just scratch the resist layer (The green part) until exposing the copper, then solder the legs there.
These boards are pretty fragile, set the iron temperature to 350°C or so.

See the shade of green where the solder is? That's the copper.

I finally finished that up I was so discouraged with this job I put it aside but I finished it up today I took a piece of copper shielding from a cell phone and used it to replace the part of the trace that had broken off of the board 400 degrees C wasn't hot enough though I turned my 936B all the way up but then I don't even know what kind of solder I'm using Now my problem is some wires came off I don't remember where they went including a large capacitor that's supposed to dangle inline at the bottom of the chassis where there's a cutout and a bend in the chassis bottom to make space for it I can't find photos of it See the pic of loose white wire and pic of capacitor at chassis base
