Repairing TEK P6046 probes
« on: January 15, 2015, 05:32:38 pm »
I bought a P6046 TEK probe with one tip broke off. Any ideas on replacing the tip?
I thought about pressing it out from the back.
EDIT calling this probe #1

I would definately remove it from the perspec first.
You might find it will press out in a vise with some hollow sleeves for support.
Be gentle.
A mate with a lathe might be able to carefully drill it out.
I'd try my utmost to preserve the dielectric and insert another custom tip for the repair.
Think I'd make a tapered one from brass, the taper to maintain strength.
Press fit & glue.

The broken pin is copper or brass.by the colour. It also is very hard drawn- I thought it was steel at first.
Trying to find out if the original is pressed into the brass housing , so I can press it out.

Have a look for a manual for it, there maybe hints in the parts list or exploded views.  ;)

I got the  manual. :)  The whole tip assembly including the ac/dc switch is one part number with no breakdown.

Just another note-when I took the probe apart , there was a loose transistor floating around inside.
I think what happened is someone dropped the probe, breaking off the one tip and bending the other and knocking one of the transistors out of its socket. Then they found the probe didnt work, so they put it on Ebay. All the transistors are socketed.

Still waiting for the pins. In the meantime I took some pics of the x10 attenuator.
The resister is marked PFR 8 or B and PM 8 or B or A
C1 is the resister inside a tube.

Bought a second P6046 from Ebay. This one [#2] is dead.
I tried the probe on #1 amp and it works, so #2 amp is bad.
#2 no -50V . Waiting for the newer manual from Artek Manuals.

p.s. Both probes were listed as working.

Got #2 working!  Removed the two cards off the transformer base and checked all the transistors and caps with my handy-dandy ESR checker. Swung the voltage pots to clean them.

I put it all together and checked the voltages. They were all there, just needed trimming.
Checked the whole assembly on my scope and it's 100%.

Now #1s probe tips. Still waiting for the pogo pins I ordered.

Artekmanuals still no download.

The high voltage filter caps are bulging on #1- C302 and C303. [same as the youtube repair]

Long axial red . Looked up the newer caps that are on #2 , they are 110uf 75v tantalum @ 70$ apiece .

Going to recap with electrolytics.
Still trying to find a probe tip solution. The pogo pins were too long.
