Replacement battery for bluetooth speaker?
« on: February 22, 2023, 09:00:29 pm »
Hi, I am hoping someone might be able to offer me some advice regarding an old bluetooth speaker that I have. It will not hold its charge, and even when hooked up to a usb charger it keeps telling me "low battery". I have managed to get it apart and removed what I would call the battery?  I had hoped there might be some information on it to help me try and trace a replacement but, there is nothing at all. I can post more pictures of the circuit board etc if that might help someone determine what it might be. It mightn't even be economic to repair, I just thought it worth a try. The speaker brand is WisePrimate, if that helps.
Many thanks for any advice at all.

Looks like a standard 18650 lithium cell with the standard DW01 protection board attached to it.  you can get those in capacities from 1000mAh to 2500mAh, and with both the protection board and leads attached.

Replacement, with leads on and protection board, is RS stock no.: 144-9406 which will likely fit in the speaker with no problems, plus has the protection built in as well, which will make replacing easy, as no need to worry about moving the DW01 board to a new tagged cell.

Measure it to confirm though, 18650 is 18mm diameter 65mm long, there are smaller AA sized cells of similar appearance.

You can salvage 18650 cells from surplus laptop batteries and there are reputable sources like Battery Hookup. Ebay cells are hit & miss, lots of scavenged cells sold as new out of China.

That’s fantastic. Thanks very much for the information. I will have a look. Would it make any difference which mAh I use?

I have checked RS and the stock number you gave me. That battery appears to be too big at 69mmx19mm. Seem to be on back order anyway. They list another, it's the right size but only has tabs and no protection. Could I use a one like this and swap over the part from my battery?  It's stock number is 880-1551.  I have a link but not sure if it's allowable to post it. So far I haven't found any others on the web with the protection and wires complete. It would make life simpler but I don't mind a bit of fettling :)
Thanks again.

You can take the protection board from the battery you have and attach it to the new one. If you don't have access to a battery tab welder, look for tabbed cells, you can solder to the tabs. A higher mAh capacity will provide longer run time and take more time to charge. Beware of absurdly large capacity claims, most cells over 2500 are fake.
