Troublesome Ribbon Cable
« on: March 30, 2020, 01:20:00 pm »
A timer that keeps track of a door outside has stopped working... specifically the keys are no longer recognised... I am pretty sure this is due to corrosion on the ribbon cable which joins the front panel to the PCB.

But it's a weird cable... it doesn't seem to have metal inside... is this printed somehow?  How can I join to it?

Conductive paint, you will have to lift one layer of plastic that is covering the paint, and using maybe some car glass heater(rear defroster) repair paint, paint over the traces to connect them again.

If there's enough slack in the cable, you may be able to simply trim a bit off the end so the socket contacts meet undamaged parts of the traces.  However, you *MUST* *NOT* pull the cable tight enough that it bends tightly round any sharp edges, or attempt to reform any sharp creases, as it almost certainly has lost a significant amount of plasticiser since it was manufactured so will now be likely to crack if its left seriously stressed.

That was my Plan A... but I didn't have any luck.  I ordered some 'silver glue' from China and will try again in a few weeks.

Also springs 1 and 8 dont seem to be making good contact with the ribbon.
