Varistor selection

Hello,

through my own mistake, I blew up a variable resistor of an unknown value on a board. Here's what the schematic looks like for that part of the circuit (secondary side of a transformer, eventually leading to a 1K resistor at the gate of a mosfet):



24ppVAC = 17V RMS, so 20V varistor?

I'm not committed to making this repair, but am turning to people with some experience for opinions.
