Wavetek 5XL no capacitance measurement
« on: November 16, 2019, 10:27:21 pm »
I recently bought a used Wavetek 5XL multimeter. I know that it is a cheap, manual-ranging, averaging multimeter and probably not worth fixing. That said, I like it and would like to try and repair it.

The multimeter measures VAC, VDC, resistance, continuity, and diodes correctly. It does not measure capacitance at all. Every range just shows 0.00. Any ideas where I should start troubleshooting? Thanks.

Perhaps some photos of the PCB might help . Hopefully its using a known chip set and you could find more hints that way.  :-//
The odd multimeter or 2 or 3 or 4...or........can't remember !.

Assuming this is the same meter, where do you see capacitance?

I see, clockwise, ACV, Amps, diode/continuity, ohms, and DCV.

If you mean Amps not working, check for blown fuse.

"An the winner of the 2019 EEVBLOG Idiot Award goes to........" (drum roll) (opening envelope) "me"

Hey! You fixed it! Thanks! Now can you work on my eyes and/or brain?!

Boy do I feel like a complete dope. I'm glad that this forum lets people post regardless of the mental capacity. I'm really not that stupid in real life.

I'm not sure why I thought the amps range was capacitance. I guess I should have been more shocked if I actually got a reading.

Thanks Retiredcaps. At least YOU were paying attention.
