You could make your own packs by purchasing 12 tagged NiMH cells and reusing the wires from the original packs.  Get cells that are at least 2200mAh as the charging circuit probably trickle charged the original NiCd cells.  NiMH cells should be trickle charged at a lower percentage of the capacity rating than NiCd cells.
