Andonstar ADSM302 Microscope Inside
« on: October 27, 2018, 08:20:02 am »
I did not find any photos of the inside of the microscope on the internet. That's why I took some photos.

Here are also some values I measured

Working distance with unchanged stand:
Code: [Select]
distance    1920x1080        2048x1536
215 mm     28.5 x 16.3 mm     26 x 19.3 mm
135 mm       19 x 10.8 mm   17.4 x 12.8 mm
125 mm     17.7 x 10 mm       16 x 11.8 mm
 70 mm       10 x 5.7 mm       9 x 6.7 mm
 50 mm      5.3 x 3 mm       4.8 x 3.5 mm

Size of a pixel in the saved image:
Code: [Select]
1920x1080   1.7 mm = 787 px = 2.2 µm/px (22" Monitor 1.7 mm = 197 mm = 115x magnification)(Monitor width  480 mm, 1920 Pixel, 1 Pixel = 250 µm)
2048x1536   1.7 mm = 947 px = 1.8 µm/px (22" Monitor 1.7 mm = 237 mm = 138x magnification)

power consumption  at 5 Volt:
Code: [Select]

What's the resolution of the integral screen?  I'm looking for something like this.  But none of the sellers I found said anything about the screen other than 5" diagonal.

I have counted the pixels with the magnifying glass, and come to ~ 800 x 480 pixels.
The visible area is 10.9 cm x 6.1 cm (4.3" x 2.4") for video view 1920 x 1080 Pixel.
And 8.1 cm x 6.1 cm (3.2" x 2.4") for foto view 2,048 x 1,536 Pixel.

For me the screen is mounted too close to the microscope at normal distance. I can't see the picture sharp then. I mounted the microscope on a magic arm and use an HD monitor behind it.

« Reply #6 on: October 29, 2018, 06:09:16 pm »
The camera sensor is probably an ON Semiconductor AR0330 1/3-inch CMOS sensor with 2.2 µm pixel size.

General Description
The ON Semiconductor AR0330 is a 1/3-inch CMOS digital image sensor with an active-pixel array of 2304Hx1536V. It can support 3.15 megapixel (2048H x 1536V) digital still image capture and a 1080p60+20%EIS (2304H x 1296V) digital video mode. It incorporates sophisticated on-chip camera func- tions such as windowing, mirroring, column and row subsampling modes, and snapshot modes.

The cpu is probably a NOVATEK NT96655 hybrid DSC/DV processor.

General Description
NT9665xBG is a high image quality, high performance, power saving and cost effective digital still camera (DSC) and digital video camera (DV) controller with excellent digital still image capturing and video streaming capabilities. It is targeted for the application of VGA to 50M pixel DSC/DV resolutions. It can be easily adapted to many high speed CMOS and conventional CCD image sensors with on chip programmable interface timing approach. The controller provides sophisticated video processing methods with built-in hardware acceleration pipeline. This is essential for achieving high performance for per-shot, shot-to-shot, and continuous shooting pictures. The controller provides flexible mechanism for auto white balance, auto exposure and auto-focusing in order to better tradeoff hardware and software efforts over the performance. Embedded H.264 video CODEC supports video recording up to full-HD 1080p30. The HDMI 1.3 Tx is also equipped for HDTV output. Rich storage interfaces are supported to make it ideal for the storage of still pictures and video streaming data. The USB2.0 high speed interface can upload/download the audio/video data efficiently to/from PC.

Data sheets can be found online.

This is great info PeDre, thanks! Some additional questions: In your first post, you seem to indicate that the total magnification is 138x when viewed on a 22" screen. The manufacturer states 560x, which is a far cry from what you measured.

And also, in the photo montage with the horizontal/vertical bars and grid, do the numbers below (3 um, 4 um and 5 um) refer to the width of the bars above the numbers? And also, I guess that's at the maximum magnification? If so, that means the maximum resolving power is somewhere between 3 and 4 um, right?

Yeah, I've calculated it my way, I don't know if there's a standard for it.

No, the µm refer to the thickness of the individual lines.

Yes, it was the maximum resolution. And with a little patience it could be a little sharper.

Great, thanks! Regarding the magnification, it just dawned on me that most likely Andonstar is also taking the 4x digital zoom into account, and 138 x 4 = 552. That's quite close to their stated 560x, so the conjecture is most likely correct. One could (and I would) argue that it is somewhat dishonest to include the digital zoom, but it is what it is.

All in all, it means the actual maximum resolving power (on a native pixel basis) is between 3 and 4 µm, and that's not bad.

I discovered it only today, it is not possible to record a video with connected external monitor, it only works with the internal monitor. Everything else also works with the external monitor.

I received one of these myself today, and in general I'm quite satisfied. The movement up and down on the stand is a bit stiff (did not disassemble to grease or anything), and the adjustment screw has a lot of play when adjusting up and down.

Image quality is very good, but mine isn't 100% in focus all across the frame, it seems. Not much to complain about, though.

How bad/good is the latency between your movements and the what appears on the screen?  I tried to use a USB camera years ago and the latency made it unusable for soldering.

There's no denying that there is some latency, but you would definitely be able to solder under it.

Thank you for the detailed specification.

Does anyone know which filter size fits the threads at the end of the lens? I googled to see which sizes were available. It turns out there's a few sizes around 30mm. I found 30mm, 30,5mm, 32mm and so on. I sent an email to andonstar support but they have not answered me.

I just measured on mine, and got 29.8 mm, so 30 mm is the correct size. The filter was quite loose in the threads, probably due to it being slightly undersize.

Thank you very very very much!!! I was sooooo long surching for this information.

Can this microscope be used with optical trinocular microscope? HY-1080 is look just like adsm302 and it has c-mount for trinocular. So I can see, adsm302 has Screw thread too. Is it c-mount?

Hi and sorry for reviving this old post!

I came to the forum after searching info on the Novatek nt96650. I come from an 8mm forum (http://8mmforum.film-tech.com/vbb/forum/film-to-digital-conversion) where we discuss about a film scanner which is based on this chipset and we are trying to hack the device somehow. Some advanced users are doing an incredible work by developing an scanner almost from scratch, but unfortunately I'm not into this as I don't have the skills and mine are more computer related.

@PeDre, would you mind sharing the details on how you gained access to the console? I suppose you used those 3 pin labeled as RX, TX and GND. I suppose you got 5 or 3.3 v from somewhere and you connected it to a TTL-to-USB convertor, right? Then you entered the console using Putty or so.

The board of my device shares many similarities with this one, and there are three unlabeled pins placed in almost the same place, so I already soldered cables there and messed a bit with them without success. Another user tried on a different location sporting 4 pins and he gained access to the console (at 33.6 kbps), but he says wasn't able to send any commands, as it looked like the vendor capped that ability. My aim was to try to use those 3 unlabeled pins, to see if I could find an "alternative route".

Do you think that makes sense? Any other hints or hacks you did to this machine? Any recommendation? I am also in search for a Novatek SDK in order to attempt to customize the firmware, but that doesn't seem to be available...  :-//

Attached are photos of the connections and pictures of the oscilloscope. The colours of the cables and channels match. At the computer I used a FTDI TTL-232R 3.3V USB serial adapter.
