Any idea what kind of VHDCI / SCSI connector this might be?
« on: January 18, 2023, 12:58:34 pm »
Hey guys,

I am looking for a certain type of very-high-density cable interconnect (VHDCI) SCSI connector (or a cable which has this kind of connector attached) but can't find any information about it on the Google-able Internet.  :palm:  Maybe some of you guys could give me a hint where to find it. I have attached some pictures below.

The connector I am looking for is used in a PCIe to PCI Expansion Chassis from Sun Microsystems. The expansion chassis was sold during the early 2000's as "Sun Microsystems Netra E1". I believe it was used as low-profile solution for rack mounted servers.

According to the Archive.org, there was a deal in 2002 between Sun Microsystems and a company called MAGMA (now part of Avid, famous for its professional video editing solutions), where MAGMA would deliver the off-the-shelf components for Sun's PCI expansion boxes. The PCIe to PCI host card was made by MAGMA, the chassis was made by Sun Microsystems.

I am using such a Netra E1 expansion chassis for my PCI oscilloscope cards but the cable which connects the host PC card to the expansion chassis is very short (about 30-40 cm, 1 ft) and I can't move the chassis around. Extending the cable to ~2-3 meters would be much more convenient because I could place the chassis on my workbench instead having it in my proximity. While powered on, the server rack fans are extremely loud in order to provide the cooling airflow (which is necessary for the PCI oscilloscope cards).

The PCI I/O cable has the Sun Microsystems Part No. 530-2977-01 (REV 01, 8425/0113). It's listed inside of the Sun Microsystems handbook but there are no further details about its construction. One end of the I/O cable has a "standard" 68 pin SCSI VHDCI high-density connector. Those were also used by other companies like HP, Dell, IBM. It was used it in their servers during the early/late 2000's, too. It was probably used for attachment of external SCSI mass storage to the servers.

The connector I am looking for is shown in the pictures below. It was made by Molex probably in 2002-2004 and has two rows with 60 connectors each = 120 connectors. I've looked inside of the connector and they adapted the 68 pin VHDCI to the 120 pin connector. Most of the connections are not populated. There might have been similar connectors from companies such as Amphenol, Centronics or Foxconn but I haven't found any suitable part number.

Another possible solution would be removing the existing connector from the short 1ft cable and attaching it to a longer one. This is a little bit risky for me because I don't want to potentially trash my good/working cable.

Any idea what kind of Molex (Amphenol?) SCSI VHDCI connector from the early 2000's this might be?
