iFixit Pro Tech Toolkit & 54 Bit Driver Kit
« on: April 27, 2015, 08:19:39 pm »
iFixit sells a good kit for several types of screws, wonder if anyone tested its quality. I'm specially interested in the tips and how difficult is to wear them out. Anyone so far?

iFixit Pro Tech Toolkit

iFixit 54 Bit Driver Kit

Basically the first contains also the second.

I've heard it's not very good.

Its decent for an "all in one" kind of kit but you would be better off with a nice set of individual screwdrivers. It feels solid and its definitively good quality, but swapping tips gets old and theres not much to hold onto with that driver. I am constantly putting in the small cross bar into the top of the screwdriver to get more leverage when turning screws. The other stuff in the kit is also just "okay". the plastic pry bar things break easily, the tweezers are pretty decent.

They sell a set of security screw bits that I've used a million times breaking into products that have non-standard screws.

But for regular screws and hex I would get a standalone set with beefy handles you can hold onto if you're using them often.

I just remember watching a YouTube review of an iFixit bit set which mentioned that the tips were pretty soft, and that they had already rounded off a couple of the Philips bits on some pretty lightweight screws.

That macro bit set you recommend is also from iFixit, is it good quality?

Its good, in that its got about every security screw that I've ever needed taking apart things manufacturers don't want you taking apart. Because its just rare security bits and not an "every day use" phillips, flathead or torx driver I can't speak to their long-lasting durability. Still, I've never stripped one had any issues. They feel pretty solid to me.

Let me put it this way. Would you use these if you were building computers all day, or a installing car stereos, or something like that, No. People buy the above 54 piece kit and use it in a professional environment and wonder why it doesn't stand up to abuse. Its not for that. But these are good kits to have around in cause you look in and opening and are scratching your head because you see a pentagonal screw with a small rod protruding from the center.

I've owned both sets for a few years, they see use a couple times a month. I have other standalone screwdrivers for everyday use.

i have the 54 bit driver set.. i use it occasionally and it's doing just  fine, but as JBaughb says i dont think they would last if you used them daily.

i can recommend it for occasional use, nothing more

I bought some iFix toolkit and i am not overwhelmed by the "quality" of this products. They feel to me like some chinese tools, but from the last decade...

I've used the ifixit tools from this kit and they are, as mentioned, sub-par and soft.  I usually use Wiha drivers now.  You can get them on eBay for a pretty good deal.

If you want something all-in-one and cheap I bought a couple sets from dx.com probably 5 years ago and found them surprisingly good.  I still have them here for those odd hard-to-find screws every once in a while.  I'd go that way before I'd go with ifixit.  Pretty much everything they sell is overpriced and underperforms.

Here's the dx kits I bought:

I've got that set and it is crap compared to Wiha. They work in a pinch, but i wouldn't buy them again. Save your pennies and buy some quality tools. The difference is night and day.

I have owned the 54 bit set for a couple years now. Good "general" set, but if you will be using specific bits frequently don't expect them to last more than 6 months of daily usage. I rounded off a bunch of torx and pentalobe bits pretty fast.
