I'm not sure if this topic has been beat to death yet, but I wanted to spell out my needs just to see if I can formulate a path. I commonly need to solder stuff in situ. Think automotive, industrial, etc. Sometimes cords are either a hassle, or just not possible. I've tried many Butane type units and they get something stuck, but in no way as pro as I prefer from the bench.
What I was thinking on was I I have Milwaukee battery tools. I noticed Milwaukee has an M12 solder iron but have not looked too much into it. Mostly thinking of the energy requirements in my head. Like an M12 slim pack is 3 18650s, probably 3ah each. One I have here is 42Wh. I already know to run genuine batteries because China scammers build with crap cells that can't take high C ratings.
But I would say that this pack for example should easily handle 1C or 3A at 12.6V or 37W. So I could maybe get at the very most 1h of operation with that, which is way more than I would typically need. Usually only a quick job.
But there are also times I need more power. Like 100W for say 12ga wires or something. I guess it could be practical to then just run an AC gun and use an inverter or grid power.
But, I was sort of thinking on these inverters that mate to my bigger M18 batteries, which are 6Ah or 108Wh. I was going to buy one anyway. Then I had the thought to use use about any solder iron I might need with that, and accept there will be a short cord, but I have options. And the little inverter is going to come in handy for other stuff.
