What size desoldering nozzle do I need?
« on: April 28, 2023, 12:32:50 am »
I recently bought a second-hand Hakko FR-300 desoldering gun, and it only came with one nozzle (that is way too big for IC boards). I can't afford a full set of nozzles right now, and I need to desolder some chips with super small solder joints. I don't have a clue what size nozzle to order. Advice?

Watch the following video at 9:45-10:05. It’s from another brand, but the principles are identical. This video is also the best tutorial on proper vacuum desoldering technique I have ever found, so I recommend watching it from 13:33 to 22:20. (Or watch the entire video and fast-forward through the parts that are specific to that tool model.)

I was making a real mess of de-soldering components last night (with my Hakko FR-301) - hadn't realized I was way over size, changed to the N61-12 nozzle and they were falling out. I must add a photo of the carnage difference.  :palm:

[edited to show picture of difference with a 1.0mm nozzle (2 on the r.h.s.) and 1.3mm (l.h.s.)]
[edited to add pic of component removed with oversize nozzle - not the header above]

my macro photography talent/equipment is in need of improvement  :palm:

I use either 1mm or 0.8mm tips on my FR-301. The smaller are better for DIP ICs, the larger for through hole components. Haven't needed anything larger than 1mm.

I have two FR301s.  One with default tip and another with 0.8mm.  For ICs, I find 0.8mm long with slightly longer shank work the best for me.  Less chance of burning near by parts.  On the other hand, removing larger components, even 1.0mm can be too small.  It's all depends what you work with the most.

Mea culpa  :palm:

checking the nozzle it was actually the N61-08 which was too large and the N61-12 is only 0.2mm less outside diameter.

I'll now definitely get a 0.8mm nozzle (N61-11) and a S/S type 1.0mm (N61-05).
